My son snapped this picture of me painting a detail of the orchid flower in my nature journal. As summer ramped up with activity, my nature journal got a little behind…but I sat down to do a little here and there!
I added a few things to my no. 5 page: blackberries, monarch and milkweed, goldfinch at my feeder, pinesap and helleborine orchid.
I wanted to do a nuthatch for the next in my Birds and Flowers series – I’ve enjoyed watching them all summer – they stay in the underbrush and are very skittish. I had to think about it for a while before I could decide what flower to pair him with – I finally decided on wild carrot (Queen-Anne’s-Lace) for it’s understated delicacy.
A couple friends suggested a robin for my next in the Birds and Flowers series! I paired him with echinacea – I liked the rusty brick red with the plum pink of the flowers.
The next in my series of Birds and Flowers: goldfinch and chicory – I love the gold and blue together ; )
I worked on my nature journal this week. Added a tiger moth that I found dead on the back steps…a sacrifice for art!
The next in my series of Birds and Flowers is a chickadee and purple thistle. The chickadee is a very friendly little bird. If you sit long enough with birdseed in your hand they’ll come and eat from it! Thistle is one of their favorite flower seeds. But, I have to be careful that the seed doesn’t sprout in the yard where it’s sharp prickles would hurt our bare feet in the summer!
I’ve started a new series – Birds with Flowers – the first here is an indigo bunting and horned poppy. I chose them because I had my first indigo bunting nesting here this summer and I bought a horned poppy for my garden – to add to my poppy plant collection ; ) They both have given me such joy this summer and I love their colors together!
This idea popped into my head while I was sitting in church on Sunday morning. The minister said something about how we can’t hold the sky in our hands or contain the heavens – yet God holds everything in His hands…providence kind of ideas. This image instantly popped into my head! I thought of dreams and wishes and if we could capture them somehow ; )
I’ve enjoyed this piece of yard all summer – my bathtub water garden, the shade trees hanging with bird feeders and wind chimes…sitting in the shade and watching the birds while I sketch in my journal has been the highlight of this summer ; )
My Aunt is out visiting from California and brought me a surprise gift! The Aqua-mini watercolor set from Sennelier and a little journal to go with it – she knows what I like!
The set comes with a little brush – very fine tip for small lines. I tried the paints out today and painted some happy little pitchers – such beautiful colors and I can mix many new colors perfectly!
I already had this little zippered pouch. It fits the little journal, paints, my water brushes, and a pen, pencil, eraser…all set to go anywhere and paint ; )
Thank you, Auntie, for a lovely little set of paints – they’re a dream to work with!!! Now, I must go out somewhere and paint!
